In Swami Muktananda's "I am That".. he tells a story of
a Yogi and his devotee, who go to sleep in the King's cottage when the King  is away. The Master warns his student, "Don't become anything".

The King returns, and discovers the student in his bed.. "Who are you?" The student answers that he is a Swami.. the King Roars, "A Swami in the Kings bed? Give him 50 lashes and throw him out". The King finds the master in the next room, and the performance is repeated, excpet when the King asks "who are you?" the Master replies, hmmm.. hmm.. The King says, "he is
an old fool.. take him outside".

Outside, the student is bruised and bleeding, and the Master is unharmed. He said, "I told you not to become anything. Why did you say you were a swami? Because you added something to your "I AM", you recieved blows from life. I did not become anything, so I did not get the King's whip.
