Sound of my fears

When I was a child I could remember waking  from night terrors with this unbelievably loud noise humming in the background for a minute or two after waking. I say background noise but it was definitely the only thing I could hear when it was at its peak like being at ground zero of a nuclear explosion while a locomotive was going by. It was never an abrupt explosion but a continous boom that is hard to explain. Sometimes I could tell if I was going to have a nightmare because I could feel and hear the vibration of this sound in the moments before falling asleep. At some point during adolescence it all stopped.

I had forgotten about the sound until a few months ago. When something triggered the memory...instead of fear I was filled with curiosity. What was this sound? What was the origin of it? Something inside said the sound came from the fear of dying in a bomb blast or having died in a bomb blast. I surrendered the thought. Few weeks later I'm drifting off to sleep here comes the soft hum and vibration gradually getting louder this time it was accompanied by a calm voice that said just go with it. I took some deep breaths and I was off the pressure and vibrations pushing me thru some threshold that I could only describe as myself followed by a brief feeling of weightlessness then I began free falling through tunnels made of light a real roller coaster ride. The sensation of possibly passing out as I'm travelling faster and faster and finally coming to a stop I arrived somewhere but everything from that moment on is foggy I then wake up.

How do you maintain awareness during these trips? I am probably hindering myself trying to control the process :/  Whenever I focus on my 3rd eye during a possible OBE the picture becomes either very clear for a few moments then very foggy or just fades away completely?
