When I first started doing the grounding exercise, all the light entered into the top of my head in a straight line or flow, filled my head neck and torso reservoir and shot down my tailbone in a straight line to the "crystal heart" of mother earth, in my vison a large, prismatic sphere in the center of the earth. On contact, light would explode and energy would shoot up the flow of light in a straight line back into my body, and all would go a the grounding exercise suggests.

But for the last several weeks, I can't get the energy to flow from my tailbone to the center of the earth in a straight line. It comes out my tailbone and shoots diagonally into the earth, then bends around the crystal sphere and shoots up the other side back into my body. I kept thinking this means I'm unbalanced in some way, and I kept trying to force my visualization to go "straight", but to no avail. So finally I stopped trying to force it's path and just follow it.

Is this "okay"? Should I attach any meaning to my wayward energy flow?

  Try sending your seed of conciousness down the grounding cord to see what is happening along the paths. Just imagine travelling into the Earth along with the light, to see what you can see. That's all astral travel really is, where ever you go in your imagination, there you are.
  Could be that you need more sky-energy than Shakti right now so Goddess adjusted the grounding for you.

Yes, it HAS cleared. Thank you. Not only that, but the amount of energy, the breadth of the energy feeds is much larger.

I also did as you suggested and dropped a seed of consciousness down the stream of light as it travelled. The first time I did it, it was like the light was traveling down a vertical tunnel (sort of like down the rabbit hole ala Alice), and I was safe in the tunnel of light, but as we broke thru the Earth's crust, I could see outside the tunnel were horrific monsters squirming around under the earth's crust.

After that first time though, the terrain became more friendly, and instead of a gaggle of squirming monsters, there was ocean under the earth's crust, and flowing down with the light surrounded by ocean felt like dipping down into the unconscious.

 It was. That is a lovely metaphor for the layers of the unconscious. First you went thru the shadow, with the monsters being a reflection of your uncleared issues, then falling deeper into the sea of the collective.
