Hello mystress,I have been doing the grounding for a while now and it is wonderful.I want to ask you about something.Lately i have been chanting a mantra that I was initiated with a while before i met you. I do it when I sit for meditation and I find that I feel very sleepy and tired the next day.Do you think I  should stop chanting for now.Thank You again.

Hey Steven!
I have practiced Japa (mantra chanting) for 2 years now. In the beginning I often got sleepy from it, but it's very different now. I use the mantra with a focal point (eyebrow center) and it becomes a really good meditation practice, it ends with increased energy and clarity. Sometimes a bit of a sensitive state afterwards though. Because I am so attuned to the mantra and the focal point it often triggers and rises energy.  But I feel it is doing its job really well, and is a good tool for clearing karmic impressions from the mind. From what I understand Mystress doesn't do mantras much, so she will probably give you a different perspective!  Mantra meditation, mantra chanting, and Kirtan (mantra in form of music) are all things that I really enjoy doing and connect easily to. It might have to do with my deep passion for sound and music!

Hey again!
I started thinking about this post again this morning, and I feel it might be a good idea to share. =)

Some people advocate against the use of mantra repetition, because the mind tends to fall asleep and you end up feeling dull and tired.

I find this to be completely true and accurate. However, the trick with mantra repetition is to focus the energy somewhere. It's basically used to put you in a state of pratyahara (sense withdrawal) If you just keep doing that, it may just be tiring.  For my Sadhana I also received a direction of mental focus for the mantra, you can put it for example in the eyebrow center, heart center, spinal passage, or in the breath.

Mystress told me once that sometimes you can feel sleepy because Goddess needs to do some work and wants the ego out of the way for a while. Maybe mantra repetition triggers this, too?

For me, mantra repetition these days has the opposite effect to sleepiness, I get really sensitive. Maybe because it triggers the rising Shakti energy. Anyways, your question was originally intended for Mystress, but I thought I'd share my own experiences from mantra meditation!

Mystress

Why do you feel you need a mantra?
