I think it is better if you find answers for your self. Questions are very relevant but any intellectual answers or ideas given by others might not help you much.
I can perhaps offer you a different angle to look on it.
I mean if you turn it around. If you consider a possibility that you are a spiritual being having an ego for moment. Then the question is not why to be enlightened nor what it is. But question is why to keep (this) ego? Once you know that you are a spiritual being who is just playing in ego for a moment you know that you are not ego. And once you see how dysfunctional ego is on personal level and global level. You will have some valid and even urgent arguments why work with ego.
So why not to just polish ego and keep it? Well for first we dont know as ego what is truly good for us. So its just smart for seekers to go in the egoless state, unity, nonduality, find balance etc. to really have some clear head. What sense does it make to think about life and spirituality while being slave of ego (filter, censor) , really foggy in observation, emotional whit noisy mind and unbalanced? But somehow ego thinks that it is ok, to not only think that way but also to act on thus produced ideas.
So I think the quest is to reach certain calm a clearer head. It was always there so not an experience nor it is new in any substantial way. It was the forgerfulness, ego who was the newcomer. Distance from ego stuff is the key to be able to observe and then surrender it.

Thanks for your response Duu. I’ve decided to surrender my questions and all the knowledge that produced them. To be honest, my previous post doesn’t even seem relevant anymore!  I don’t feel any need to find out any answers for anything. Perhaps I was just releasing some old intellectual jargon, thanks for listening .
